We seem to be on a roll with plants who are trying to be look-a-likes! The dune sunflower, you guessed it... isn't a sunflower at all! Helianthus debilis will bloom pretty much all year round for us here in Indian River County. It can get a little bit crazy and out of control so don't be afraid to cut it back if you are using it in your landscape. It's a quick grower and can help prevent erosion. The flowers are bright yellow with a brown/black center that will attract lots of pollinators including butterflies, moths and our native, as well as, honeybees. The trailing growth provide cover for birds, lizards and toads. Birds will even get in the action to hunt for hiding spiders and insects, and will also eat the seeds! This plant can be found at Captain Forster Hammock Preserve and Archie Smith Fish House as well as lots of other locations!
