Walk within dry sandy areas in Indian River County and you may come across a cactus! Florida is home to 14 species of native cacti species, the majority of which are threatened or endangered. A species of least concern, the Prickly Pear (Opuntia humifusa) is commonly seen throughout our conservation areas. If you catch it during spring, you might see the neon yellow blooms that are popular among pollinators. This plant is readily available at native nurseries and is sold both as an ornamental and as an edible. The flowers, pads, and fruits are all edible, though the latter has many hard seeds that can be a challenge to eat. If you choose to plant one at your home, take caution around the long spines and small hair like thorns, called glochids.
