Trail 56 connects Trail 5's southeastern end with Trail 6. From the gate on Trail 5, it passes a junction with a spur to East Trail 3, crosses a wet meadow, then intersects Middle Trail 3 before turning eastward and crossing Buckbrush Creek, an ephemeral stream. Trail 56 then climbs up a short but steep hill out of the creek's floodplain, then curves northward again crossing prairie and ending at Trail 6.
This trail climbs one short but steep slope, otherwise rising gently from south to north. Its surface is bare earth and is prone to muddiness in the rainy season, as well as mild seasonal flooding near Buckbrush Creek.
