The Memorial Sighting Pedestal was commissioned by Eugene's own author Ken Kesey and installed in 1990. The pedestal commemorates Jed Kesey and Lorenzo West, two members of the University of Oregon wrestling team who lost their lives in a traffic accident.
Sculptor Pete Helzer, the pedestal's creator, hoped it would serve as an invitation for viewers to reflect on the dynamic, ephemeral nature of landscapes through time and space. The pedestal orients viewers to the current surrounding landscape while inviting imagination and research into the Willamette Valley's vast, varying geologic past.
