Sky Blue Lupine is a startling blue splash among flatwoods and scrub during its spring bloom. The tall flower spike is accompanied by velvet soft leaves and hairy seed pods. In 2024, new research was published that showed genetic differences in Lupine across many regions in Florida, leading to three new species being identified (Bridges, 2024). If you are among Indian River County, you are most likely to encounter the Lupinus floridanus. Florida Lupines are not commercially available due to their specific habitat requirements, a short-lived life cycle, and slow germination. However, there are many conservation areas in Indian River County where it can be appreciated in its natural habitat. If you come across this distinct plant, snap a picture and share it on Outerspatial!
